Did you know that long time ago, candles were used to determine your status in life? The more candles you lit, the more money you have. In very old books you will hear of a great hall being brilliantly lit as if it was much more of a big deal than it is now. Well, it was. You couldn’t just press a button. It took a lot of candles and was thus a sign of status and a special sense of occasion. Darkness was the norm during the night. In the 14th century, a candle guild was first established in Europe.

In 1709, candle makers were able to persuade the parliament to ban at-home candle making! [1] (And we think corporate power is a new thing!!) This created a monopoly and in turn, drove up the price of candles. It’s amazing how people would go to such lengths to rule the world…

Nowadays, fortunately, candles can be bought by just about anyone. And yes, we can buy at-home kits and all the bits we need so that we can make our own candles!

Our friends at Natural Living Ideas have generously compiled a list of beautiful homemade candle ideas. These candles are made of natural materials.

Here are some of my favorites:

1. Beeswax Candles – Beeswax is a natural wax produced in the beehive of honeybees. It’s the most natural wax that you can ever get! It also provides such an amazing scent that will really make your home smell so warm and cozy. If you’re planning to make your own beeswax candles at home, use a pair of chopsticks (the ones that attach at the ends) and insert the wick in between them so that it will stand straight while you pour the melted wax.

2. French Vanilla Candles – Vanilla is one of the yummiest scents that you can ever smell. This tutorial will teach you how to recycle your old unscented wax and add some natural ingredients to add a beautiful scent that is not overpowering.

Alternative: Instead of vanilla beans and coffee, why don’t you try vanilla beans and cinnamon? You can also try using chopped dry herbs mixed with dried lemon and orange rinds.

3. Lavender Beeswax Teacup Candles – If you have a few teacups at home that you no longer use, you can fill them in with beeswax to make a candle that’s great for centerpieces! You can even make a bunch of these to give out as party favors! Choose your own organic essential oil or you can just leave it as it is.
