Hairpins make your hair look prettier and more ornate. If you’re attending a fancy party or you just want to dress up on a casual day, all you have to do is to style your hair and add a few decorative hairpins.

Fun fact 1: Hairpins were used by a lot of people even in ancient times. In China, the wearing of hairpins is an important part of a girl’s rite of passage. Younger girls would usually style their hair in braids but once they’ve reached a certain age, their hair would be styled in a bun that’s decorated with hair pins. These girls have transitioned into womanhood and are now of marriageable age. [1]

Fun fact 2: The lotus flower is a big symbol in a lot of cultures and religions. In Buddhism, the lotus flower represents purity of the body, speech and mind. According to legend, Gautama Buddha was born with the ability to walk and lotus flowers seemed to bloom everywhere he stepped. [2]

Our friends at Ornamentea created a tutorial that will turn ordinary bobby pins into beautiful lotus flower hairpins! Here are some hairstyle ideas:

1. Flower Bun – Start with air dried hair. Comb your hair and apply some heat protectant. Brush through and then divide the hair into sections. Take your favorite curling iron and then start curling your hair. Once your hair is curled, twist your hair into a bun. Secure with bobby pins. Style your hair so that it looks more volumized. Take your lotus flower pins and start decorating your bun with them so that your hair will look so bedazzled!

2. Half Up Twist – Start with curled, wavy hair. take the right front section of your hair and start twisting inward. Start from the roots. Twist your hair and pin it at the back with your lotus pins. Do the same thing with the front left section of your hair. Add more lotus pins in the center. You may ask someone to do this for you.
