Kanzashi are hair ornaments that are used in traditional Japanese hairstyles. They were first used in Japan during the Jomon period. At that time, people would wear a thin rod or stick in their hair, believing that it could ward off evil spirits.

Kanzashi can be made with different kinds of materials. Gold, lacquered wood, silver, silk and even plastic can be used to make kanzashi. Here’s a tutorial by Gustamonton that will teach you how to make satin kanzashi flowers.

Tools and Materials Needed:

1. 5cm Satin Ribbon
2. 4cm satin Ribbon
3. Needle and thread
4. Liquid Silicone or Fabric Glue
5. Scissors
6. Lighter
7. Flower Charms

Comments/Suggestions:

1. Use a good glue to help stick the hair clip on the back of your kanzashi flower. This will look great on an updo. Tie your hair into a high ponytail. Get a bun maker and wrap the rest of your hair with it. Fix into place so that your hairstyle looks neat. Secure with bobby pins when needed. Once you’re done styling your hair, clip in your Kanzashi flowers.

2. The width of the satin ribbon determines the size of your kanzashi flower. Try to make different sized kanzashi flowers and sew them on a throw pillow. Try to look for printed pillows like polka dots or stripes. For your flowers, use one contrasting color and another color that matches with your pillow. Add more interesting elements by adding beads, buttons and other accents.

3. If you want to decorate a little girl’s room, make more kanzashi flowers and stick them on the wall. It will bring the wall to life!

4. These flowers are also great to stick on headbands and even canvas bags! They will really enhance any vintage looking print!

5. If you have old macaron boxes or any cookie box, you can recycle them and turn them into pretty containers to store your knickknacks! Cover the boxes with any fabric that you have lying around the house. The more elegant the print is, the classier the box will look. Make your kanzashi flowers as directed in the tutorial but instead of placing flower charms in the middle of the flower, use a pearl or a crystal charm.
